Click, Click….So it begins at 1:00 pm on the first Thursday of every month. We light a candle and say a prayer.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets to knit, crochet, and enjoy fellowship. Sometimes stories are shared about how we each learned to knit or crochet. There are times when the gentle clicking of the needles becomes a mantra that frees up memories and more stories are shared of lives and times gone by.

In our busy lives these kinds of opportunities to connect with one another seem few. We also share joys and laughter and generally have a good time in the process of creating shawls, small afghans, hats, and mittens. This past year, several individuals and organizations have benefited from the work of the Prayer Shawl Ministry including our own church members and friends, The Women’s Shelter of the Salvation Army and Arnot Ogden Hospital ’s neo natal unit. In the New Year, we plan to expand our ministry by donating hats and mittens to the Red Cross and prayer shawls to Corning Hospice.

If you know of someone who might benefit from being given a prayer shawl (or lap afghan), please tell one of the Deacons. We welcome new members to our group. Even if you cannot come to every session come whenever you can. We have an abundance of yarn and needles and hooks, so you won’t need to supply your own.

Thank you to all who have donated yarn, hooks, needles, storage bins, money and prayers. If you have any questions call Phyllis Bishop (Pastor Jon’s wife) at 739-3713. Click, click….

Missions

Missions is a very important part of our ministry at First Presbyterian.  We support several community activities including the Horseheads Food Pantry,  Second Place East, Roadside Cleanup, Meals on Wheels, Literacy Volunteers, youth organizations and others.  We annually conduct four different offerings that benefit those in need around the world as well as locally and nationally.

The Mission Committee meets on the second Wednesday of the month in the church library.
