COFFEE HOUR

Members of the Membership Committee ( MMC ) are changing our way of forcing people to slave over a hot stove to produce goodies for Sunday’s coffee hour.

At present, our good-hearted deacons do coffee hour the first Sunday of every month. Other Sundays have been sponsored by church members coerced, via phone, by the Pats Recard and Wade.

Pat and Pat tearfully begged and threatened, cajoled and stole newborns to complete their mission. Members became so upset they added Pat and Pat to the list of telemarketers they DON ’T want to hear from.

So, as of June 1, let the word go forth. The deacons will still do the first Sunday. And the MMC will sponsor coffee hour on the third Sunday.

We will rely on other church members to sign up for Sundays in between. Please do. If all goes well, the MMC may begin returning newborns.

PS: We hope you are enjoying the new coffee hour round tables your MMC acquired for you so people can enjoy each other’s fellowship better.

We also notice that some of our flock uses them for poker games with coffee hour cookies as chips, especially the chocolate chip variety.

Gambling is not allowed at the table reserved for the pastor and his family, affectionately known as the “Knights of the Round Table.”

July 16th @ 6:30 Ice Cream and Game night Friday, July 16th, @ in the chapel. Please come for an evening of fellowship and fun. Please feel free to bring some friends!

It may seem like we have had a lot of fundraisers since the beginning of the year -- WE HAVE!!!!!

Potato Bake for the congregation in January

Jazz Evening in February

Rummage Sale in April

Potato Bake in May for the Public

Each year, the finance committee looks at the number and amount of pledges for the next year and then they charge the Stewardship Committee with raising a certain amount to contribute to the general budget of the church. The pledges for 2010 were down so we have been charged with raising $6000 this year - That takes some thought and time to come up with events that are going to raise that kind of money, but also have other purposes, i.e., bringing the community into this church so they can learn about us and keeping our prices low so that the community can benefit from our fundraisers as well.

We will be taking June and July off with the Chicken Barbeque scheduled for August. We are a little more than half way to the goal of $6000 - will still have a harvest dinner and Bazaar this fall. Our fundraisers usually are a lot of fun, (some hard work), but we have a great fellowship and get to know each other in different ways than just sitting beside someone on a Sunday morning. If you have other ideas, we would welcome them. You can call me (796-9635), email me ( janandguy@peoplepc,om ) or see me in church on Sunday.

In Christ,

Jan Stillman

Tuesdays in May

Our four evenings of supper, fellowship and thought-provoking discussion were well attended and enjoyed. Pastor Jon led us in discussions about how we support each other in our church, the joys and challenges of growing older, and inner resources. Mary Schrock presented very helpful information about health care proxies and advanced medical directives. Heartfelt thanks to Jon and Mary.

Upcoming event:

Outdoor Games Night in early June, date TBA.

Recent events:

Lock-In: Fourteen youth attended a Lock-In overnight retreat at First Pres in March, 2010. There was devotion, service, and fun - with a midnight devotional, make your own pizzas, games and activities, Guitar Hero, a great pancake breakfast, and a service project making St. Patrick's Day goodie bags and notes of encouragement for people who receive Meals on Wheels. Special thanks to our wonderful cooks: Ellen Benedict, Doug Day, Matt George, Alan Hutchinson and Barbara Hutchinson!

Wallyball: Always a good time - we played off-the-wall volley ball at the Diamond Gym in April.

Spring Retreat: In May eight youth and three adults went to Penn York Camp in Ulysses, PA for a great overnight retreat in the woods. We spent Saturday morning team building and problem solving on the low elements of a challenge course, and the afternoon up on the high ropes and zip lines. A great adventure at a beautiful camp.

To the few who donated money for the “Crimson Red Leaf Maple Tree”.

The tree was purchased and under God’s watchful eye is growing.

Enjoy watching it grow!!

Thank you to Joe Matejka for planting the tree for all to enjoy.

June’s Delights

Roses cascade over fences,
Flowers blossom more brightly now;
Grass is greener, skies are bluer,
Snowy blossoms dress the bough.
June is shining on the hillsides,
Meadows, too, are fresh and fair;
Daisies, buttercups and clover
Catch gold sunbeams in their hair.
Dogwood shades the country pathways,
Bird song fills the summer air;
Twinkling violets fringe the brooklets –
Junes’ delights are everywhere!
Month of simple charms and beauty,
God’s world’s smiling, all in tune...
And I find my heart uplifted
By the loveliness of June.

Generation gap
After crawling into Grandpa’s lap, little Freddie asked, “Were you in the ark with Noah, Grandpa?”
The grandfather chuckled, “Why, no, Son, I wasn’t.”
The youngster persisted, “Then why weren’t you drowned?”
